Which diagram to use

Wow...finally found a good forum for hookups. You all don't show up in the google search but Dogpile found you.

I have digital cable, just bought a dvd-r (jvc), and new flat screen sharp tv. How do I hook all of this right so I can watch my dvds and record from the tv if I need to? The way I have it right now I know isn't right as I am only getting messed up screen when I put it to dvdr to watch a video.

Also, is there a way to record with the dvd-r of one tv show while watching another tv show? someother quip I can buy?
