Hello. I am a new CableTV subscriber and welcome this site to help others if I can and get some help which I need. It's at the frustration level with all the different hookup manuals for the various components I have and I am at my wits end by now. I have CABLEVISION service with a non-HDTV DVR. An ONKYO TX-SR603X(B) receiver; Panasonic Stereo VCR; Panasonic DVD; Yamaha CD and an 'old', 9 yrs or so JVC Stereo PiP 27inch TV. I recently purchased POLK speakers. A center channel and two large column speakers that sound real good and am playing the TV audio through the speakers. I not only have 'old eyes', I have 'old ears' so it's a lot better to hear. However, I guess I MickeyMoused around to hook all this stuff up so it just 'work's, well most of it anyway. I can't get the VCR to tape, but I'd like to do it 'right' and prepare myself for a larger screen LCD or Plasma hopefully this year.
Questions I have are like "do I run an S-Video cable from the DVR to my TV which the cablevision instructions say I can? Which Video source do I use to operate my TV? 1,2,3 or 4 or does it not matter? Do I connect my DVR digital audio out to the Onkyo using an RCA cable? Just a plain ole RCA cable??? How in the world do I hook up the VCR so I can play and tape to it from TV, recorded programs stored on the DVR, etc. Something about 'output#2' on the DVR is used to copy recorded programs from the DVR to the VCR? How does that get connected?

Lastly, if I hook up an S-video cable from the cablevision DVR to the TV, does that cancel out the coax connection I have to the TV as well from the VCR??

THANKS YOU for your help!

Hi Larry:

Welcome!

First, if you can use S-Video (over line video using RCA connectors) do so. It's better than line video, and much better than RF via coax. Remember, however, that S-video is for video only; you'll still need to the White/Red cables for audio.

As for hook-up info, as Jody (CableWithAView) suggested, start with the hookup guide (http://cabletv.com/hookupguides.htm) and go from there. If you really can't find what you're looking for we'll craft a hook-up guide for you!

Best,

Jonathan
