Comcast missing channels with new HDTV

I got a new Sharp Aquios 32" HDTV. I took out the coax from the old TV and pluged it in, ran through the channel setup, and I'm not getting all the channels? I get the networks, PBS and a few other cable channels but most cable channels are missing. The channels that are there are labeled "2.1" not just channel 2. Or 4.1, 4.2, not just channel 4. It seems like only HD channels are comming in. I ran the setup for "analog and digital channels". Any ideas? Do I have to get a box for this set to get basic cable channels? I know I can't get the premium channels without a box but I thought I would get basic cable.

You may need to switch from antenna to CATV then try a search again. Some HDTV's give you a choice of analog scan only, digital scan only or both.

The 2.1, 4.1, and 4.2 you see is the channel number (4), the .1 is the main channel and .2 and higher is the sub digital channel on the main channel.

In my case I have an antenna, my local channel 48 shows 48.1 (standard/ hi def channels), 48.2 is NBC Weather Net + and 48.3 is a music channel. On cable it works the same way, on the cable system I work in, the digital music channels are broadcasted on ch. 77 in the clear, with 54 music channels the channels show up as 77.1 thru 77.54.

    Hope that helps some.

    Losing HD channels

Hey, I'm having a similar problem. When I run auto program, I get the HD channels at 4.1, 4.2, 7.1, etc. and the normal standard def channels.

However, about every couple of weeks, the HD def channels are gone! I have to run autoprogram again (which takes 10 minutes) and sometimes it doesn't find all the HD channels.

Does anyone know what's going on? I have Comcast (non-digital) cable.

Thanks in advance for your help.

During talks between broadcasters and providers, broadcaster may ask for their feeds to be encrypted instead of letting them remain free. In some cases the channels were launched originally free to view and others demanded payment and their signals encrypted from the start.
